This photo surfaced recently. Notice anything? It appears as if all of the children of color are "not cool" and all of the fairer skin children as "cool." Outside of the one kid walked around the pool with a drink. The Red Cross received lot of a criticism for this illustration and ended up apologizing.
The photo does have a much of a skewed vision of a day at a public swimming pool, but in my opinion look at who it is coming from. They are one of the most charitable organizations in the country if not the world. I think they should get some sort of benefit of the doubt for a mistake like this. I find it hard to believe someone in their art department is just sitting around trying to find a way to push their subtle racisms for the world. Pretty pathetic if so.
Also where did this picture come from? It appears to be on a bulletin board which is probably not in any official building. Maybe this is a local division of the Red Cross in some small town park. Not saying that makes it right by any means but let’s not treats a global organization who does so much good poorly. This appears to be a simple oversight from an employee.
In addition to all of this, if no one pointed out the hidden racism in this, would you even notice it? Some would but most probably wouldn’t.
There is racism still in our country there is no denying that. We have seen Donald Sterling with an outburst; we’ve seen Paula Deen have a moment, and even Michael Richards from Seinfeld. This is not something we should be worry about as a threat. To me there are a lot bigger problems than this accident. I am glad they apologized and I hope nothing else is made of this.
